A bathroom is the room most likely to cost you twice. Not because tiling is hard, but because everything that keeps water out of your house sits underneath the part you look at.

The Australian standard for waterproofing a wet area is met with two coats. I put down four. It costs me more and you will never see a single one of them, which is precisely why I am telling you about it on a website instead of hoping you notice.

Kitchens and laundries are the same idea with different services. Plumbing, drainage, ventilation and power all have to be right before a single cabinet goes in, because after that they are behind something.

A complete waterproofing system

The important thing about waterproofing is what you cannot see once the tiles are on. We install it as a complete system to the manufacturer’s specification, with two coats under the screed and two on top where applicable. It costs me more, but it is part of getting the work right while it is still open and accessible. If you want to see it, come and look at a job while it is open.

  • How long is a bathroom out of action?

    For a full strip out and rebuild, expect a few weeks rather than a few days. Waterproofing needs time to be applied and cured properly between stages, along with the other work involved in rebuilding the room. I will give you the actual timeframe for your room before we start.

  • Can you just re-tile over what is there?

    I would rather not, and on most jobs I will tell you why. Tiling over old waterproofing means trusting a layer you cannot inspect. If the existing waterproofing fails afterwards, the new tiles come off with it and you pay twice.

  • Do you do kitchens and laundries too?

    Yes, and they often get done at the same time as a bathroom because the trades and the disruption overlap. Doing them together usually costs less than doing them a year apart, and it is worth pricing both ways.
